When it comes to hiring a team, the first thing you need to do is decide whether you want one at all. Some podcasters find it better to just work alone, or with one friend as a producer. As you will see in the interviews, opinions vary somewhat. However, if you do want to hire a team, there are certain roles you want filled. For example, one person who will be necessary to have is a producer. For a weekly podcast, one or two producers should be able to get your podcast edited and ready to go. On the other hand, if you want to put out a daily podcast, you may want either more producers or other specific positions like sound engineer, senior producer, interns, and, of course, a co-host.
Now, when it comes to having a co-host, there are advantages and disadvantages to having one and it really all just comes down to your preference. With a co-host, you can split the work, split the lines, and have more natural banter to keep the topic flowing and the talking less awkward. On the other hand, you have less control over you podcast and also have to split the profit (if you end up getting any). Personally, I prefer listening to podcasts with co-hosts, but that’s completely up to you. As for the podcasts of my interviewees, one was shut down because of a co-host, one is going strong with a co-host, and one of them is going strong with just one host.
